In her first work of nonfiction, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood recounts her experiences on Gilmore Girls - the first and second times - and shares stories about life, love, and working in Hollywood. This collection of essays is written in the intimate, hilarious, and down-to-earth voice that made her novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe, a New York Times best seller.
"This book contains some stories from my life: the awkward growing up years, the confusing dating years, the fulfilling working years, and what it was like to be asked to play one of my favorite characters again. You probably think I'm talking about my incredible achievement as Dolly in Hello, Dolly! as a Langley High School junior, a performance my dad called 'you're so much taller than the other kids.' But no! I'm talking about Lorelai Gilmore, who, back in 2008, I wasn't sure I'd ever see again. Also included: tales of living on a houseboat, meeting guys at awards shows, and that time I was asked to be a butt model. A hint: all three made me seasick.

Audiobook Humor NON-FICTION snarky

Talking As Fast As I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between by Lauren Graham is an autobiography highlighting Lauren’s career with an emphasis on the Gilmore Girls. Lauren narrate’s the book herself an aspect I enjoyed.  I laughed, recalled favorite episodes of Gilmore Girls and reaffirmed my love for Lauren and her character Lorelai Gilmore.

I will be totally honest. I read 99.8 % fiction. Reading for me is an escape, a chance to travel from the comfort of my home. When I select a book outside the realm of fiction, it is more often than not a history book surrounding an event or era. So why did I listen to Talking As Fast As I Can? Gilmore Girls. The show began in 2000, I was a young stay at home mother of three and that hour spent in Stars Hollow was magical. Rory loved books; I loved books and Lorelai’s addiction to coffee rivaled my own. I loved the flaws and the dynamics of the friendships. Later, I would watch reruns with my daughters. I think, I will always look back on the show fondly.

I was curious if Lauren Graham was anything like her character Lorelai. Boy, was I rewarded. Graham was pure, awkward, and at times downright funny. Her story felt honest. It was refreshing. She felt like someone I could hang out with over coffee. Like myself, Lauren is a private person and reveals very little about her life, but what she does is wonderful. She had me giggling, connecting and admiring her for just putting it out there. Her stories about dating and her husband were priceless.

Graham highlights how she got her start, goes through the seasons of Gilmore Girls, talks about the final season and the reunion. She also gives some highlights on other roles she has played like those of Sarah from Parenthood. We also get tidbits about her life as a child, and while this book doesn’t go into any real depth on any particular subject, it was fun to listen.

If you are a biography junkie this might leave you craving more, but if like me you don’t need all the dirty secrets but want to have a friendly chat with an actress you admire, grab Talking As Fast As I Can.

This book sounds so good. I loved her in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood. I’m glad you liked this book and I can’t wait to read it too! 😀 Excellent review Kim!

  2. Kayla

I loved this audiobook! I tried to listen to it at work and had to stop after she started telling the fish story because I couldn’t hold in my laughter.

  3. Nicole

I wasn’t a fan of the recent series of Gilmore Girls, but I loved the original and I’m really intrigued to learn more about Lauren. Might have to check this out!

  4. Poem Fanatic

I never read autobiographies…. well except for Malala’s. I just loved Graham in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood so I’ll just have to check it out sometime soon!

  5. Kayla (The Tome Chronicles)

I just finished this last night and thought is was very snarky and loved it!

Oh this sounds great for me! I just got this the other day but now you’ve made me want to look into the audio version too! In fact, because of you I’m actually trying audio books for the first time ever although I admit it’s a Harry Potter re-read (is it a re-read if I’ve never listened to them before?).

I’m definitely trying this one way or another – lovely review!

  7. La La in the Library

I didn’t watch The Gilmore Girls, but I was a rabid Parenthood fan. This sounds like it would interest me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and review. 🙂

  8. Jennifer

Aw, this sounds awesome. I gave a copy of this book to my mom for Christmas, and I’ve been kicking myself for not reading it before wrapping it. 😉 I just listened to the sample, though, and she narrated it herself?! I’m so happy I didn’t read it now. 🙂 I’m definitely going to seek out the audio version.

  9. Lily B

man I wish I was more into books like these, there are so many that actually do sound interesting. Plus I totally love her in anything I’ve seen her live, she sounds so down to earth

  10. Cyn

Glad this was a good listen! I do love listening to autobiographies so I’ll have to get to this soon. Great review, Kim!

  11. Lorna

I didn’t watch Gilmore Girls when it was first run. Since then I have watched the first two on NetFlix and just never went on with it although I did enjoy it. The reason I love Lauren Graham is from her many visits on the Ellen show. Those two together are hysterical and keep everyone laughing every time. I don’t do non-fiction much but this one sounds like one I might like. Glad you enjoyed it!

  12. Christy LoveOfBooks

I’m so glad I finally watched to show. I bet this is a fun book to listen to. Did you speed it up at parts to make it feel like when she starts talking fast on GG? lol

  13. Debbie Haupt

I’m like you Kim, don’t like most bios especially ones that read more like a school text 🙂 but I do like a chat with a star I admire.

  14. Melissa (Books and Things)

I rarely read bios but sometimes you just get curious. 🙂 Don’t kill me but I think I’m one of the few people left on the planet who has not seen this series. I think I saw an episode or two once but never got into it too much. May have to see what all the hype is about. 🙂

  15. Maureen Beatrice

I just received this book in the mail today! I can’t wait to start reading!! I’m a big Gilmore Girls and Lauren Graham fan so I’ve been really looking forward to this book. I’m glad to read you enjoyed it. And how awesome that Lauren Graham herself narrated it!

  16. Heidi

Confession. I have never seen an episode of the Gilmore Girls… gasp…. I know. Maybe I should catch it on Netflix.

  17. Beth

I read this book before Christmas and enjoyed it. It was funny and a quick read, I was a little disappointed though. I felt like there could have been much more meat to this book. It almost felt to me like this book was written because there was a demand for it, not because Lauren wanted to write a memoir. I felt it was a rehashing of a lot of facts I already know (though obviously enjoyable to have them come from the lady herself!). As much as I love Lauren Graham, Parenthood, and Gilmore Girls (which is A LOT) I was kind of left feeling like this book was unnecessary. I feel like if you write a memoir/autobiography, part of the package is getting a little deeper and more personal.

Yes, I think if you keep up with tabloid news or followed her career, a lot of this wasn’t new, but for fans who don’t typically read bios, this was fun, and offered some memorable moments.

  18. Katherine

I’ve watched a little bit of Gilmore Girls but Lorelei’s relationship with her mother was so much like my own I had to stop because it was given me anxiety! I have enjoyed what I saw and I’ve always thought Lauren Graham just seemed so down to earth and fun. My library has this on audio and I’ve been considering it but it sounds like I need to get on the wait list!

  19. Rowena

I want to read this book, so bad. I need to just get myself together already and get it. I will do that right now. Thanks for the review, Kim. It’s exactly what I needed to hear to get my butt in gear.

  20. Sophia Rose

Once in a while I get curious about a real life person enough to snag a non-fic about them. I could see myself reading/listening to this one. I like that you felt a connection and she seemed real in the book to you.

  21. Laurel-Rain Snow

I loved The Gilmore Girls, both the regular series and the revival. If I were ever to “listen” to a book, it would be one narrated by the author…someone like Lauren Graham.

My favorite nonfiction is usually a celebrity memoir, so I expect to feel right at home here. I have this one sitting right behind me on my office coffee table/trunk. Hope to dig into it soon! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  22. Quinn's Book Nook

I’ve been curious about this one. I love memoirs of funny ladies. I loved Mindy Kaling’s books, Amy Poehler’s book, and Tina Fey’s book. I’m so glad you loved this even though it’s not your normal read. I’m definitely going to add this to my TBR.

  23. Christine

I’m going to borrow this audio from my library – I loved Gilmore Girls when it was on and used to watch with my mom. Always loved how bookish Rory was 🙂

  24. Kay

I got this book for Christmas and I can’t wait to read it! I am a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan. I read mostly fiction too. I think I am going to love this just like you did.

  25. Victoria

I’m like you, I mostly read fiction, but once in awhile I pick one of these books (I’m actually in the middle of Anna Kendrick’s Scrappy Little Nobody right now). I’m a huge Gilmore Girls fans and I loved Lauren Graham in pretty much all the roles I’ve seen her in – I’m definitely going to check this one out! Great review. 🙂

  26. Nick

I need to read this one. I really enjoy her though her characters always annoy me haha! But she’s a great actress and her personality is always so sunny and charming in interviews.

  27. Berls

I bought and listened to this one a couple weeks ago and I agree 100% with you. I, too, don’t read much non-fiction these days. After grad school, it’s kind of the last thing I want. But I love Lauren Graham for her roles on Parenthood and, of course!, Gilmore Girls. I listened to the book at my normal rate of 2x and it sounded just like Lorelei 🙂 And I guess I was living under a rock because I had NO IDEA about her and Peter! It made me very happy to hear, since I like him a lot too 🙂

  28. Ailyn Koay

i am hoping that you will tell me that she narrates the audiobook
then i will totally get my first audiobook ever!!!!

  29. Melliane

I really like her role in the TV show, I really enjoyed seeing it. It could be interesting to read this even if I don’t usually do that
