Nonna's Corner

It’s another edition of Nonna’s Corner. I started this feature when I became a Nonna. It is a chance for me to bond with my grandbabies, dubbed the “Royals” by a Caffeinated follower. As I explore books for them, I hope to share them with you. Today I am sharing my thoughts on the illustrated hardcover novel When You’re Feeling Sick.

This laugh-out-loud picture book from Coy Bowles, guitarist for the Grammy Award-winning Zac Brown Band, will have sick kids feeling better in no time!
Sneezing? Coughing? Taking a sick day? Don t worry, you'll be feeling better soon thanks to this hilarious picture book from Coy Bowles, guitarist of the Grammy Award-winning Zac Brown Band. Full of encouraging and super-silly rhyming advice on how to face sick days with courage and a positive attitude, "When You're Feeling Sick" is just what the doctor ordered! Comes with a sheet of stickers to bring a smile to every sick kid's face."

When You’re Feeling Sick by Coy Bowles shares what is intended to be a humorous tale about getting sick and what to expect. Geared towards three to seven-year-olds, I think this will appeal to young boys. The book is hardcover with a few lines on each page and vivid illustrations. The illustrations were done by Andy Elkerton and are rich and vibrant. They feature silly monsters, green children and brightly colored dragons.

The story itself is one that left me with mixed feelings. Aspects of it I liked which included what happened when you get sick, getting rest, taking your meds and listening to your doctor. The other elements meant to be silly struck me wrong, like spilling soup on your head, the sick song and other bits. As I said, I think a young boy would burst into giggles especially at the mention of poopy, and Broccoli sprout monkey-hair burgers with green ketchup. The writing for me was all over the place with parts that rhymed and others that felt randomly placed. Reading the tale aloud left me unsure of pacing.

For the right audience When You’re Feeling Sick will probably deliver giggles and assure children they will feel better soon. As for me, this is not a book I will be adding to my grandchildren’s’ bookshelf.

Ooh, pacing changes and changing rhyming patterns do NOT make me a happy person. Especially when I’m reading these out loud! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Ooh, this sounds like something my nephew would enjoy. I shall put it on my buy list since he’s got a birthday coming up. 🙂 Thanks for the review.

You’re right, the kids would probably get quite the laugh. Would you say the words are easily decodable? Lots of CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant)? Because I have a feeling I wouldn’t love reading this to the kids, but they might enjoy it as a read-to-self/read-to-partner book.

This is one you will want to thumb through first Berls. Even I had to re-read some sentences. For the most part, it rhymes and reads like a Dr. Seuss book.
