Tenth Day of Bookmas

Question # 10: What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

  • FIND YOUR VOICE: Your writing voice is everything. Find it. Guard it. Hone it. Believe in it because there will be times in your career when you are the only one who does. Your voice is what sets you apart from every other writer in the known universe.
  • DISCOVER YOUR CORE STORY: Yes, every author has one. You will spend your career exploring it. Your core story is defined by the themes, conflicts and worldviews that call to you – not a particular fictional landscape. Once you know your core story you can take it almost anywhere in the market.
  • KNOW THE MARKET: The only way to do this is by reading widely in the various sub-genres of your chosen genre. And, yes, this goes for Book Club fiction, memoires and non-fiction as well as mystery, suspense, romance, romantic-suspense, fantasy, science fiction, etc. In the end, they are all genres and they all have multiple subdivisions.
  • CONSIDER JOINING A WRITER’S ORGANIZATION: Here in the Pacific Northwest we have the Pacific Northwest Writers Association. I can also recommend the Romance Writers of America – best writers association on the planet, regardless of your chosen genre. Ask your librarian for the names of other groups.

Day 10 Book Recommendation for Holiday Gifting:

Readers who read romance tend to read widely outside the genre – especially suspense. I certainly do. My brother, Jim, also likes suspense so I compared notes with him. If you’ve got a full-on suspense reader on your list Jim and I can recommend John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers series. Sandford has a terrific storytelling voice. Latest title: ESCAPE CLAUSE (A Virgil Flowers Novel) by John Sandford

Woohoo!!! I’ve always wanted to read a Krentz story but can never pinpoint where I should start. Should I start with her Quinn stories, her Krentz stories, or her Castle stories? Book lover problems all day everyday lol. Congrats on your release!

I am making a list of authors whose books I have but not listened to and next year I am going to do my best to read more of my own books and this author is on that list.
