To celebrate the rise of their new queen, three goddesses of the moon created three stars, one of fire, one of ice, one of water. But then they fell from the sky, putting the fate of all worlds in danger. And now three women and three men join forces to pick up the pieces… Mermaid Annika is from the sea, and it is there she must return after her quest to find the stars. New to this world, her purity and beauty are nothing less than breathtaking, along with her graceful athleticism, as her five new friends discovered when they retrieved the fire star. Now, through space and time, traveler Sawyer King has brought the guardians to the island of Capri, where the water star is hidden. And as he watches Annika in her element, he finds himself drawn to her joyful spirit. But Sawyer knows that if he allows her into his heart, no compass could ever guide him back to solid ground...And in the darkness, their enemy broods. She lost one star to the guardians, but there is still time for blood to be spilled—the mermaid’s in the water and the traveler’s on the land. For she has forged a dangerous new weapon. Something deadly and unpredictable. Something human.

cliffhanger ROMANCE paranormal smartfunny SUSPENSE

Bay of Sighs  by Nora Roberts is the second novel in her paranormal romantic suspense trilogy, The Guardians. Three goddesses of the moon created three stars as a gift to the new Queen but those stars fell from the sky putting the fate of all worlds in danger. As foretold three men and three women have join forces to find the stars and save them all. Bay of Sighs  continues their quest and shares Annika and Sawyer’s romance.

Time spent with the Guardians trilogy has been enjoyable and while it follows a similar formula to Roberts’ previous trilogies, she always manages to hook me with her characters and the battle of light versus dark.

One of the things I like most in this trilogy is the uniqueness of each character. The six fated to save the world are more than just human. Sasha is a seer and Bran a magician. Annika a mermaid granted three moons with human legs to complete her quest.  Sawyer a time traveler, Doyle an immortal, and snarky archeologist Riley is a shifter. Together they formed a family and have each other’s six. In Bay of Sighs they continue to grow stronger as they search for the second star.

In the first book, Stars of Fortune, we had Bran and Sasha’s romance. I continue to enjoyed the growth we witness in Sasha.  Bay of Sighs focuses on the second star, one of water but it also has a slow building romance between Annika and Sawyer. I am super excited about Island of Glass, the last book featuring Doyle and Riley. These two have wicked banter and nip at each other. While the storyline is predictable, it’s the telling of these stories that make them such delightful escapes.

Annika is an absolutely hoot and her summery personality and outlook is infectious. Since Annika has lived her life in the water, all is new to her and it created plenty of humor and banter. Sawyer is attracted to Annika, but sees her as an innocent.  However, Annika fell in love with Sawyer years ago. She wants more with him but is bound by rules all sirens must follow and cannot tell him. Thank goodness, for her friends Sasha and Riley. They help find loopholes around those rules.Poor Sawyer!  Sawyer is a traveler and as a Whovian I was already swooning. I love how level-headed and brave he is. He was also patient with Annika and protective. It was fun watching Sawyer fall. Roberts delivered heat with tender moments in this impossible romance.

The suspenseful thread regarding their quests continues. Roberts had us spending time with the dark side. Wounded in the first battle their enemy gathers aid from a human. Blood oaths and bargains are struck bring danger for our fated ones. We get plenty of battles between research, friendship, training and our romance to keep the reader flipping the pages. It was fun seeing all of them work as team and watching them  push the limits of their abilities. Dark and suspenseful moments were brutal and sent a shiver down my spine.

While I typically would not mention cliffhangers in this type of trilogy, since the final battle is yet to come….Roberts does leave us with questions, concerns and hope for Sawyer and Annika. While they make plans this romantic is hoping for a miracle from the gods.

Fans of paranormal romance, mythology, quests and friendships will enjoy Bay of Sighs and the Guardians trilogy.

I need to read more Roberts. I still need to finish her Blood Brothers trilogy.

On a side note … that cliffhanger image … is that lotion?

    • kimbacaffeinate

LOL…now that is going to bug me..I have no idea. Parajunkee made it. I thought it was some kind of device…now I am not sure!

  2. Sophia Rose

I enjoyed your review of the first book in the series. Looks like things are building and getting more intense so I can see why you want the last book so much.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Not really. She does a lot of these paranormal romantic suspense trilogies. Recent ones to check out are The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy, Sign of Seven, and Key Trilogy

  3. Laura

I have always loved Nora Robert’s supernatural trilogies. I have not heard of this one, and now I must add it to my list. Great review.

  4. Lorna

The reason I didn’t start this series was because of mermaids. While I have enjoyed a few mermaid books I just wasn’t ready for another one. But Nora Roberts. I just read and reviewed The Obsession thanks to reading your review and loved it!So now I am wondering. Maybe I should request comes the library. Thanks!

    • kimbacaffeinate

Oh I can see you liking this trilogy. Remember it’s pararenal..so its not really a mer book :). I am so glad you loved the Obsession

  5. Melissa (Books and Things)

Hm… I do think I’ll wait for that third book because I can see me wanting to devour them all at once. Yep, another reminder that I need to read her paranormal series. This one is certain to make my must read list of her books. Darn you! Stop adding to my wishlist! 😉

  6. Kristin

You mean the romance isn’t wrapped up in each book?!?!?! Waaaahhhh!! I love the sound of the awesome characters but I’d be pulling my hair out (and probably forgetting about the series) in between books. But Roberts seems to have hit it out of the park with this PNR trilogy. Great review! I’m almost hooked 😉

  7. Maja (The Nocturnal Library)

I have to admit I liked the first book, but I wasn’t too crazy about it so it never even crossed my mind to read this. I should. I adore Nora, but I much prefer her romantic suspense.

I love her romantic suspense as well. I read the Liar back in March and that poor review keeps getting shuffled back to make room for all the dang audiobooks I am listening too..LOL

  8. Mary Kirkland

I used to read her books all the time because my mom loved her and she would bring her read books to me. It’s been a while but I’m sure I could read this one with no problems.

  9. Lark

I have this on hold at the library but I don’t know if I can wait — I’m #24 in line and they’re only getting 10 copies. I will probably just to break down and buy it!

  10. Tanya

I have read several of her books on my kindle. I will have to search for this one now! Thanks 🙂

  11. Katherine

I can’t wait to read this one! I really loved the first book which was nice because I hadn’t been sold on the last few trilogies. She really does a fantastic job with light and dark. I’m glad to hear we see more of Sasha’s growth as I really loved her. My only decision is if I want to read this one now or try to wait patiently until the 3rd one comes out and then read this and that one all together. Decisions, decisions…

  12. Diane Sallans

I haven’t started this series yet – I often like to read the whole series together. I’m not always as enthusiastic to read the paranormals, but Nora does suck me into her stories.

    • kimbacaffeinate

My Mom likes to power read them too. This time I have been sending her the paperbacks on release day and she sits and waits for the mail truck!

  13. Rita

Nora Roberts always pleases, some more than others. I like the mythology angle to this and it is understandable if some of her trilogies become formulaic being that she’s written so, so many books! At least you said the characters are well-developed and enjoyable and I think I will look for the first Guardian book to start off the series. Thanks!

  14. Lekeisha

I have no doubt that I will eventually read this trilogy, and finish her others that I’ve started. Great review!

  15. Aubrey Wynne

I haven’t read any of Nora’s paranormals. Some of her Irish trilogies had fairies and ghosts, which I really enjoyed. I might try one of these.

  16. Angela

I’m nearly finished with book one and planning to read the second one in the near future.

  17. Jeann

This series sounds really magical with each of the characters and their powers! Thanks for sharing Kimba, it sounds like you really enjoyed it.
