Worlds collide when Rachel Morgan of The Hollows meets Peri Reed of The Drafter in this exciting new short story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison.

The paranormal and the futuristic meet in this thrilling novella featuring your favorite badass heroines from two of “the amazingly gifted” (RT Book Reviews) Kim Harrison’s most beloved series: the Hollows and the Peri Reed Chronicles. The magic of the Hollows runs full force into the technological sophistication of The Drafter when a device capable of carrying a city’s data stream pulls Rachel, the bounty hunter witch of the Hollows, between realities, marooning her in a world where the supernatural holds no sway. To get Rachel and Jenks home, Peri, the dangerous renegade of 2030, must decide what will chart her future: her blind trust in those who grant her power, or her intuition telling her to believe.

CREATIVE magical scifi urban

Waylaid by Kim Harrison is a fun smash-up of Rachelle Morgan of the Hollows and Peri Reed of the Drifters. Harrison calls it a fan fiction and this short delivered a fun, quick read for fans of the series.

Coffee Pot Review:

The Hollows series takes place in Cincinnati  after the Turn where witches, vampires and other supernatural creatures live among the humans. series takes place in a futuristic Detroit in the year 2030. Harrison sets up a scenario where Jack and Peri accidentally pull Rachel Morgan into their world.

I was excited for the opportunity to spend more time with Rachel and Jenks and dove right into Waylaid. As I read Harrison’s introduction, I could not help but wonder if she could really pull this off. Indeed she did!  The storyline was clever and I consumed the tale in one sitting. Poor Peri did not know what to think, and kudos to Rachel for mostly handling it like a trooper, our little Rach is all grown up.

I enjoyed the similarities between Peri, her world and those of Rachel’s. Each has to draw on her own strength and talents to get Rachel back to her timeline. I would not mind seeing these two team up again in the future. I loved that Jenks appearance and we briefly see another character from the Hollows. What was with the cat? So curious, and Jack’s taste in TV/movies rocked. We could totally watch Supernatural together 🙂

Entirely too short Waylaid was a clever, fun read and gave me a nice fix. Fans of the series will not want to miss this short.

I was very worried that due to the lackluster performance of the Peri series, that the author was trying to hard, and brought Rachel and Jinks over to help pump up the interest in her new series. Yes, yes, I know, I am super cynical girl. I am glad that she was able to pull it off.

I had no idea the Drifter series wasn’t doing well, I loved it, but it wasn’t UF so some fans may not make the crossover to science fiction.

  2. Lorna

I have only read the first of the Hallows series so I probably would be hopelessly lost. I loved Jinks though 🙂 Glad this was a good, short “fix” for you!

    • kimbacaffeinate

You would probably want to read The Drifter first too. Awe I love Jinks too. Oh man, you haven’t even gotten to all the good stuff in the Hollows!

Ha – yeah, I was like ‘whaaa’ about the cat. Kind of funny. I enjoyed this too. The end kind of made me sad though, know what Peri is REALLY going through.

Oh my goodness yes,…don’t feel bad though. I am finally getting around to some awesome series folks were raving about for years.

I haven’t heard of this book or the series but I love everything you mention and it’s just outside of my comfort zone enough that I’ll feel like I’m stretching my boundaries. It sounds like I need to start at the beginning to really understand what’s happening here but it sounds like an entertaining series so that’s no great hardship!

The Hollows series ended and was an urban fantasy that I loved. The Drafter series just started but she took the worlds and characters are brought them together. It totally reads like fanfiction but was such fun. I hope you decide to try the Hollows or Drafter series.

OOoh nice! I can’t wait to read this one! I downloaded just the other day! Love Kim’s books and eager for more Rachel and Jenks!! Great review!

  6. Leona

I have Dead Witch Walking so I haven’t even dipped into the Hollows yet. I tried Drafter on audio but I couldn’t really get in to it so I stopped it 10% in. I have some serious catching up to do.

  7. Melissa (Books and Things)

Seriously what is with that cat? 🙂

I love how it the worlds blend. I now have to read the Hollows (I’ve only read book 1). It made me curious for more of that world.

  8. Heidi

I am looking forward to diving into this one as I have missed Rachel and the gang. I can’t wait to see how it all ties together. Too bad it is too short.

  9. Candace

What?! How did I not hear of this? It sounds AMAZING! Okay, I’ll have to read it for sure once I catch up on the Hollows.

Ooo a fanfiction of sorts, that actually sounds really fun. I love her Hollows series, which I desperately need to finish and I even think I have her first book in her other series as well, I’m so behind!

Nice review! Don’t shoot me, but I haven’t read anything by her yet. I think I have the first Hollows book somewhere around here though… I’m not sure. I really want to read that series. 😀

The Hollows are urban fantasy, and the Drafter is more science-fiction but this was such fun seeing the characters merge and interact.

  12. Nick

How fun that she mashed up characters from two series! I would be wary too, but I’m glad that the author delivered.
I haven’t read any books by her – I may have read a couple of YA books from her – but I’m intrigued!
    Lovely review, Kim!

  13. Rosa

I have read any of Kim Harrison’s books yet, but the Hollows series is on my wishlist. I wasn’t much of a fantasy reader, but lately I’ve grown to like it.

If Peri has an inner strength like Rachel, I really want to meet her. I haven’t started Peri’s series since I want to finish Rachel’s first. I’m really happy that Harrison pulled off a meeting between her two characters and their worlds though, Kimberly. And hopefully she will have them team up in the future. 😀

I’ve been on the fence about this book since I saw it. I love Kim Harrison, but I felt like this some sort of marketing ploy for the Peri Reed series. I didn’t understand the point of this. As I’m reading more review of this story (I haven’t read it yet), I’m seeing that it is a pretty good story. I still not sure the idea behind this, but I’m thinking I might have to give this story a try. I do miss Rachel and Jenks. Great review.

  16. Jenny

Fun! I love that she wanted to give fans a little treat by combining her two worlds. There are a couple authors with several series I’d love to see combined into a little novella or something. So glad this was a sinner for you Kim!

  17. Wattle

I really do need to read a Kim Harrison novel. I’m pretty sure I have one or two on my shelves somewhere (I definitely have Dead Witch Walking). This sounds like a fun mashup of her series 🙂

  18. Angela

I’ve not read hear of these authors but they all sound intriguing. I really need to start reading more urban fiction.

  19. Braine

I haven’t met Rachel yet but this is a treat for fans that’s for sure. Almost like Rachel is passing the torch to Peri.

  20. Lexxie

I agree, Kim! Waylaid was the perfect fix for fans of the Hollows series 🙂 I loved seeing Rachel and Peri together! Their personalities are so very different in some ways, and so alike in others. And what about that cat??
    Great review 🙂
