Dina DeMille isn't your typical bed and breakfast owner. Her inn defies laws of physics, her dog is secretly a monster, and the only permanent guest of the inn is a former galactic tyrant with a price on her head. The inn needs guests to thrive and guests have been scarce, so when an arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance. Unfortunately, for Dina, bridging the gap between space vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. To make the summit a success, she must find a chef, remodel the inn, keep her guests from murdering each other, and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an innkeeper....

Sweep In Peace by Ilona Andrews is the second book in the Innkeeper Chronicles. While the eBook released earlier I held out for the audio. Renée Raudman narrates and I just love the added element she brings to their stories. Sweep in Peace was intense and at times dark, but Andrews sprinkled it with a touch of humor. The listen was addictive and one that kept me up into the wee hours.

Currently the Inn has one guest Caldenia, an exiled tyrant with a bounty on her head. The Inn needs business to sustain itself and not just financially. When George an arbitrator arrives wanting to hold peace talks in the Inn between the Holy Cosmic Anocracy vampires, the Otrokars loving referred to as the Hope Crushing Horde and the merchants of Baha-char, Dina can hardly say no. The interactions and social dynamics of these clans/species were fascinating.

“Caldenia blinked. “Who are the attending parties?”
“The Holy Anocracy represented by House Krahr, the Hope-crushing Horde, and the Merchants of Baha-char. They coming here for Arbitration and they will probably try to murder each other the moment they walk through the door.”
Caldenia’s eyes widened. “Do you really think so? This is absolutely marvelous!”
She would think so, wouldn’t she?”

The Andrews took us through Dina’s role as the Innkeeper during the arbitrations from beginning to end.  There was never a dull moment. I was either stifling a giggle or holding my breath. Sweep in Peace had many different threads from the chief she hired to handling warrior boredom and it held me spellbound. Tricks, theft, murder, and promises all kept Dina forever juggling. The girl is clever and I do not recommend crossing her. Yet Dina is also a softy, and you cannot help admire her. I love that if she friends you, she champions you.

“Football is a wargame of land acquisition.”

We see familiar characters like Sean, the vampire and the local law both of which provided some humor. We also get updates, and see a certain wolf from book one. I am told some of the new characters introduced were from the Edge series, so now I need to read them. Caldenia was a hoot and sometimes downright creepy. The Inn itself is magical, and I would never want to leave..although other guests may be an issue. LOL.

“The universe was full of wonders. Some of them would drive you insane if you thought about them too long.”

The Andrews are a spectacular writing team bringing scenes and emotions to life. I could see each character/species as if they were sitting next to me. They did a wonderful job of explaining and allowing us to identify with the warring factions. Renée Raudman brought them all the characters to life, especially the merchants and our outcast chef. The Andrews and Raudman together are magic! I recommend listening to anything the three of them produce.

“Are you going to let me go?” Jack asked quietly.
“I’m thinking about it.”
“So Gaston gets let go but I don’t?”
“I like him more than I like you.”

The ending of Sweep in Peace left me satisfied and excited for my next visit to Gertrude Hunt.

“We make our own choices in life. Our actions shape our lives, and we alone are responsible for them.”

Yay! More Dina! I really enjoyed this one, too. Though I was a bit sad there wasn’t more Sean, haha. I loved the clash of the clans, and Dina having to keep them entertained! Lovely review, Kim!

I held out for the audio too. I’m so glad they were able to get Raudman to narrate it. She does such a great job. I loved the chef and how Dina handled the boredom. I didn’t know you hadn’t read The Edge series yet. You should read it, or should I say listen. Raudman narrates those too. There are only four books, so it is a pretty quick series to get through, but so worth it. 🙂

  3. Jennifer

I checked it out from the library but didn’t have time to read the ebook before it was due so I bought the audio. LOL I’m going to relisten to book 1 and then listen to this one.

I really need to get on this series. Your review makes them sound marvelous. That is neat that the narrator is so good that it was worth the wait for you.

Oh, my goodness — this sounds awesome. The Kate Daniels series has been on my TBR for a while, and now I’m definitely going to have to add the Innkeeper Chronicles. Fingers crossed 2016 will be my year to read this author. So happy you loved this sequel! Hope you’re having a great week *hugs*

How can I resist this one? There’s an Inn! I can never resist an Inn even if it involves monsters, warring species, defying the laws of physics and all kinds of other stuff. Plus, Andrews is an author I’ve been wanting to read so I’m going to take the Inn as a sign that it’s time to pick up one of her books.

I love Ms. Andrews and her paraimagination. I haven’t read one of her books in a while, but I love it when others love her, too.

  8. Lorna

I have only read one book by these authors. This series sounds more interesting to me than the first one I tried, You have me wondering I should try listening first. I will have to think on it. Great review!

I am going through withdrawals after reading all the Kate Daniels books. so now is a good time to start this series, especially since you were so kind to gift me the first one. I am going to do it very soon.

I can’t remember if I have the first one on my wish list for audible or already have it. But either way I definitely want to listen to this series. It sounds fantastic!

I read no reviews before reading Sweep In Peace. I actually read all 4 The Edge series books before I picked up Kate Daniels series. That was my first experience with the Andrews team.
So what I’m getting at is I actually did not make the connection until after reading the book and Rabid Reads (blog) review of the book. I was like no way how did I miss this. It’s not the out come The Edge readers would have saw coming for the characters that show up.
Hope you enjoy The Edge books it’s pretty intense.

Is there going to be another installment? I thought this was a duology, so I wanted to wait until this was out before starting them. I’m looking forward to the series no matter what though.
