Known as the wicked witch of Russian fairy tales, Baba Yaga is not one woman, but rather a title carried by a chosen few. They keep the balance of nature and guard the borders of our world, but don’t make the mistake of crossing one…Having triumphed over a powerful enemy and ended up with both a wonderful guy—Sheriff Liam McClellan—and an adorable adopted daughter to raise as a Baba Yaga, Barbara Yager is ready to welcome her happily ever after. But first she must bring Liam to the Otherworld and get the Queen’s permission to marry him. The Queen, however, is not so easily persuaded. She gives them three impossible tasks to complete in two weeks’ time—and if they fail Barbara will have to watch Liam slowly age and die like all humans, and kiss her happily ever after good-bye forever.Includes an exclusive preview of the next Baba Yaga Novel, Wickedly Powerful.

I was excited to read the novella Wickedly Ever After by Deborah Blake. It is book 2.5 in the Baba Yaga urban fantasy series and features Barbara Yager from book one, Wickedly Dangerous. Seeking the Queen’s approval to wed Sheriff Liam McClellan they travel to the Otherworld and the tale that unfolded quickly drew me in.

While I am not a huge fan of novellas, Blake drew me in with the promise of visiting the Otherworld and their fickle Queen. I cannot help but imagine her as the Queen from Alice in Wonderland.

It was lovely getting updates on Liam, Babs and Barbara. In Wickedly Ever After, they travel to the Otherworld to seek the Queen’s permission to marry. Her approval will allow Liam to drink from the water of life and death allowing these lovebirds to grow old together. Accompanied by their dragons and Barbara’s new charge, things do not go quite as expected. With a little help from the court, they are assigned three impossible tasks. Blake weaved in humor, romance and shared more about the world of the Baba Yagas.

The plot was fun, and while time was limited due to the length of the novella, Blake did a wonderful job of sharing their quest and the outcome.  She even gave us the opportunity to visit with Baba Yaga, Beka Yancy and her Marcus.

Overall, Wickedly Ever After delivered all that I hoped for providing an entertaining escape. I am anxiously awaiting the next audiobook, Wickedly Powerful set to release in February 2016.

I like that the author also writes non-fiction about witchcraft, I hope that it’s weaved into her fiction books as well! This definitely sounds intriguing!

Everytime I see these books, the covers draw me in because I want to know more about the dogs. What can I say, I’m a dog lover. I put this series on my TBR list when you reviewed an earlier book. I just need to move them up. I do love snark.

  3. Aurian

I’ve recently read this series, and I love it. So thanks for this review as I did not know about this new novella! Going to get it 🙂

I did buy the first one of these on audio after reading your last review on them. My plan was to listen on my Thanksgiving trip back home to Ky and then my trip got cancelled. I think maybe I just need to go ahead and listen to it because you make them sound so good!

I have the this series on audio to review, I think I need to put it on my list to review next. I have so many audios I am getting so behind now…lol.

Novellas are iffy for me but I can never resist them! They’re a great way to see if an author works for me without committing to a full length book. This does sound interesting and I love the sound of the whole series so I need to give this one a try.

Katherine, if you haven’t read the rest of the series, you might want to start with the prequel novella, Wickedly Magical 🙂

I’m glad you really liked this. I can never resist novellas, but they so rarely amaze me. I haven’t read this series but it sounds interesting.
