What if you're a suburban mom with a snarky sense of humor and a wild imagination prone to dreaming up disasters? What if you and your friends take your daughters for a camping trip, and while on a quick trip to the nearest country market you see a man being bullied and then beaten? What do you do? Back away quietly? Not if you're Molly Deacon who, along with her Mittyesque imagination, has a temper not to be trifled with. Stepping in to rescue Alan Cartwright has consequences far beyond what Molly could ever imagine, and she must find hidden reserves of strength to survive a terrifying chase through a foggy night.

thriller Audiobook SUSPENSE

Out of the Fog by Carolyn Nash is a suspenseful thriller with a heroine who tends to have one heck of an imagination and a snarky sense of humor. Narrated by Ilyana Kadushin I quickly slipped into the tale and listened in a single sitting. At just about two and half-hours it is the perfect listen for travel.

Molly Deacon is camping with her daughter and friends when she is elected to make a run to the nearest market for supplies. We quickly get to know Molly and her vivid, somewhat “worst case scenario” imagination as we drive the countryside roads in heavy fog. When she arrives at the local market, she witnesses a group of men beating a young man at the local bar and grill next to the market. When the shop owner refuses to help Molly steps in and rescues Alan Cartwright. What results is a terrifying evening that will have you listening intently.

Nash tells a compelling tale in this short that allows us to learn about the characters, the town and those pursuing Molly. She manages this while notching up the thrills. We join Molly as she must outwit her pursuers and I loved how her vivid imagination came to her aid. I liked Molly even when she was terrified she kept it together and I would like to think I would have responded similarly.

Ilyana Kadushin did a wonderful job of narrating. She managed to convey both Molly’s fear and her humor. She helped set the tone giving me an enjoyable experience. Alan was more of a mystery, making me question whether we could trust him.

Out of the Fog is perfect for those who love a good thriller and a snarky, quick-witted heroine.

I think this would be a really good listen. I am glad you enjoyed! Plus, I love snark 🙂

  3. Sophia Rose

I got this one, too, and really enjoyed it. I agree that Molly was a good heroine and her humor did help in the face of all the terror. It was fun to get a Secret Lives of Walter Mitty retelling with a gender twist.

  4. Katherine

I like the humor element and I can definitely relate to her ability to come up with the worst case scenario. I think I’d enjoy this one!

  5. Lily

Maybe it’s what i like to call my ‘snarky’ personality but characters like this one that also have snark like personalities are always my favourite. I’m so thrilled you liked this one!

  6. Candace

The main character sounds great! I hadn’t heard of this but I like that it’s a short audio too.

  7. Kristin

OOooo, this does sound kind of awesome but why does the name “Alan Cartwright” ring bells in my head? I like the suspense, its short plus add in the snark and humor and I’m sold! Great quick review!!!

  8. Heidi

I think this sounds like a lot of fun. I love a good mystery along with snark, plus it is short, one you can listen to in one sitting.

  9. Jenny

Yay for Molly keeping it together even when terrified! I like to think I would be the same too Kim, but sadly I feel like that wouldn’t actually be the case. There would probably be a meltdown of some kind. Love the illustrated cover on this one!!!

  10. Angela

I’ve not heard of this one before but I’m adding it to my list. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

  11. Samantha

This sounds extremely interesting! I like that the heroine is snarky. I’m going to have to check this one out this year. Especially since it’s short.

  12. Lekeisha

It’s good that so much came from a short story. When an author can do that, I’m sold on their writing. This sounds like the perfect audio to listen to.

I love this sound of this, Kimberly! Snarky heroines are some of my favorites and it seems like there is just enough humor to relieve the tension from the suspense. Great review!

  14. Nick

Molly sounds like a really fun heroine! I love that she’s snarky! You don’t see that a lot in suspense novels.
Glad this audiobook was fun for you, Kim! 😀

I love a good thriller and if more than that we have a great heroine and full of humor, that’s so much fun! thanks for the discovery!
