Hello October.  September was a weird reading month with an odd slump but I managed to read/listen to 18 books, one of which I DNF’ed at almost 50%. Well I am an another year older and hopefully a little wiser. I celebrated my birthday on Thursday and the week held a  few surprises. I came down Tuesday morning to find my oldest had arrived in the middle of the night and was visiting until Thursday evening. She lives over 4 hours away. On my birthday, we got our annual Flu Shots. Right? On my birthday! But, that is when my hubby’s work offers them for free. On Saturday we went out to dinner and then to see the Martian movie. I shall report on that later.  Hope everyone has a wonderful week, stay caffeinated!!

Oh what a nice surprise for your birthday to have your daughter come and visit. I hope you had a lovely time and great birthday!

I think I read a tweet or FB update that you were thinking of reviewing The Martian (movie). I haven’t read the book and decided I’d leave it now (as I usually do one or the other – book or movie) and so now I’ll see the movie. I’ve been hearing good things about it!

The movie was a very good adaptation , of course I still felt the audio was better..it is impossible to capture all the elements of a book on film.

  2. Greg

Happy birthday! Glad it was a good week… and nice to have family home. I hope the movie was good- it’s getting quite the buzz, and I’m looking to see what bloggers think.

Thanks Greg. The movie was good and I felt it was a good adaption. In managed to capture the humor, his skills and the images of their ship, Mars etc were well done.

Nothing says happy birthday like a flu shot! But going a year without the flu is pretty great I guess. What fun to have a surprise visit from your oldest! You got some interesting books this week. I really want to try the Kate Meader and the Lauren Griffin. Have a great week and happy belated birthday!

Yes, I started it and I am enjoying it..not completely wowed..but I only gave book one of the Kate Daniels series a 3 so..we shall see.

    • kimbacaffeinate

It was a really good adaption Michelle. My peeps who haven’t read the book all loved it. Of course, I knew what was missing, but I was satisfied and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

  4. Tressa

Happy, happy birthday! And that is lame about getting flu shots on your birthday, but you’ve got to get them when you can, right? At lease you had a surprise visitor, which I think is super fun. 🙂 Have a fabulous week!

    • kimbacaffeinate

Oh not my sister but my oldest daughter. She moved about 4 hours away and we only see her occasionally. I was not expected her. We had a wonderful time 🙂 Thank you!

  5. Jackie

Happy belated Birthday Kimberley! I hope you enjoyed your dinner and Martian movie. It’s Sunday today and it’s my birthday. I know I won’t be doing anything special because my boyfriend has to work. My mother sent me money though so… I see you added two Kresley Cole books. MacRieve and Dark Skye. I loved them both . Have a great week!

Happy Birthday Jackie!! Since your boyfriend is a work..i hope you get to snuggle up with a good book! Xoxperts has been sending me two books a month in the series..I have a lot of reading to do

  6. Emma

Whaley birthday (belated). Hope you enjoyed your time with your daughter. I will be interested in hearing your thoughts on The Martian. I loved the book so have been thinking of giving it a miss.

Happy belated birthday, Kimba! <3 Really, flu shots on the day? Sounds like a sitcom, lol 🙂 We went to see The Martian too. Don't know about you, but I have definitely enjoyed the book more. Hubs, who hasn't read the book, found the movie particularly dense. Meh…

My hubby and kids enjoyed it but hadn’t read the book. I thought it was a good adaptation but the audio was better..but they did a good job.

I bet your surprise visitor was the best birthday pressie ever! Even though a flu shot is hard to compete with 😀
I think it’s funny that 18 is a slump for you as that would be a fab month for me! I’m curious about The Martian, I do think I’ll try the audio first though as everyone seems to rave about that.

Happy (belated) birthday! 18 books in a month doesn’t sound like a slump to me at all. I wish I had read that many books in September.

Happy Birthday, Kimba! Sounds like a happy week.

Even with your reading slump you did well and I sometimes think we need a bit of a slump to realize how lucky we are to read and enjoy our reading. That’s what I tell myself anyway…lol.

I’m looking forward to hearing about The Martian. I still want to read the book before I see the movie. And I need to read some of your reviews, too. Hope you have a great week!

Happy Birthday (a few days late)! Hope you’ve had an amazing week 🙂 I know as a daughter that lives 3 hours from my mom that she gets excited when we come in and over just as excited. Hope y’all had a good visit.

How was the Martian? I really want to see it but I also want to make time to read the book first.

    Have a great week!

I hope you’re still celebrating your Birthday this weekend! You deserve the best, girl, you work so hard for your family and for your new business!

Btw, what’s your average month of books read? Have you done any blog ahead posts on yearly stats yet that you might have looked at that? I’m just kind of curious considering you’re such a crazy reader. The numbers person in my is wondering how adding audio books affecting to your average. I’m such a numbers geek!!!!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and weekend!!

21 + a month Kristin..but I had some DNF’s this month and kept shuffling things around..which isn’t like me. Since I listen to a book all the time and I am reading at the same time it has bumped my numbers. See, I only listen when I would not be able to read..for example folding laundry etc. Most years I average 250-275 books/audios. While I am on target for 250, I do not see myself exceeding it this year, mostly because of life changes, i.e. Sophia Marie. This time last year I had 45 posts scheduled ahead…this year not counting what I have done for Blog Ahead I have 12..that is right 12..omg!

      • Kristin

Don’t forget! You also started a business!!! Granted, you’re not working “for the man” anymore but still!

Thanks for the analysis! I actually find that interesting (GEEK!!!) Life is always changing so technology will just HAVE to keep up with us!!!! 😉

  17. Tanya

What a nice birthday surprise, your daughters visit not the flu shot! Thanks for hosting. I’m trying to get ahead with Blog Ahead but we decided to do our Travel the World in Books Readathon in October so I have a lot of work for that!

What a fun and exciting birthday surprise Kimberly. And four hours away? Pff.. man.. that sounds really far especially if you think that when I drive for 4 hours I’m already out of the Netherlands and in France. LOL
What did you think of the movie? I haven’t read the book but I saw a preview for the movie and was super excited about it.
    Have a nice week 😉

Happy birthday, Kimba. The visit from your daughter sounds special.

I see a couple of books that interest me in your posts this week and next. You’ll be reviewing the new Owl book which is due out soon. I’m on the waiting list at the library for their one and only copy of Owl and the Japanese Circus. I hope I’ll get it very soon — that’ll have me primed for the next book’s release.

The other book that really interests me is The Aeronaut’s Windlass. My library doesn’t have a copy, but I have requested it. All the reviews I’ve seen — including yours — indicate that it’s really good. It seems to be right up my alley, too: Jim Butcher and steampunk. A winning combination.

I hope you had a good birthday!! I’m so glad it is October. I adore this month.

I’ve also sort of been in a kind of book slump. It seems every book I read is only okay, just kind of meh. I can’t find anything that I really sink my teeth and adore. But I’m looking for it!

Sounds like you had a Happy Birthday-I am glad 🙂 I am confused about one thing. You posted a new to the cafe book, Shadow Fall and I thought you just reviewed it? And I just read and reviewed it based on your review. I can’t remember anything it seems-maybe it was another reviewer 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

I did have a lovely birthday. You are not confused. I received a copy from a publicist of Shadow Fall and reviewed it..then another copy came in my Xoxpert box for October. (which will go in a box for a giveaway)
