After losing almost all of her clients in one fell swoop following an accident involving whipped cream, private chef to Hollywood’s elite Roxie Callahan gets a call from her flighty mother, saying she’s needed home in upstate New York to run the family diner. Once she's back in the Hudson Valley, local organic farmer Leo delivers Roxie a lovely bunch of walnuts, and soon sparks—and clothing—begin to fly. Leo believes that everything worth doing is worth doing slowly…and how! But will Roxie stay upstate, or will the lure of West Coast redemption tempt her back to Tinseltown?

I love romances filled with wicked banter, humor and food. Nuts by Alice Clayton combines all three with heat delivering a seriously fun romp. Nuts is the first book in the Hudson Valley series and it left me wanting to pack my bags and move to rural upstate New York in search of zucchini.

Coffee dates with Nuts

  • First Date: We meet Roxie Callahan as she is preparing food in a trendy upscale Callie home for a silicon bitch. I love the foodie aspect of the tale already. Do not go on this date hungry. We spend a little time getting to know Roxie particularly about her childhood, and her crazy Mom. The next thing you know we are heading to Hudson Valley and her family dinner. Roxie has agreed to take over the business for the summer while her Mom enters the Amazing Race. The tale is full of humor and being inside Roxie’s head is a laugh a minute. I got her, I got what high school was like and the need she feels to reinvent Roxie Callahan.
  • Second date: Who knew veggie talk and nuts could get me hot. Its true veggies are sexy by god! Roxie’s summer is about to get interesting when a local farmer carrying a basket of nuts walks into the dinner. From that moment on, I grinned and laughed like a fool. Roxie’s inner dialogue is not to be missed. She is bright, but clumsy. Sex yet she talks too much. Murphy has her number on speed dial. (Murphy’s Law) I adored her! What she does it is sinful. With all the cake and pie talk, I need a bakery now!! Clayton introduced other locals and I fell in love with a handsome couple that has recently escaped New York and are rehabbing an old Victorian. Roxie decides a summer fling will make her summer enjoyable and Leo will make the perfect partner. Summer Loving has never been more fun.
  • Third date: Hot, fun, sexy and hilarious is how my third date begins. I love the chemistry between these two! Even if they have not  yet admitted it there is more to this relationship than a summer fling. Roxie discovers Leo has not been very forthcoming and she panics. The angst was not overly drawn out and the secret ended up being a delightful addition to the story. Roxie experiences some growing pains and has to find herself. We meet her best friends and get a sneak peek at the next romance. I ended this date grinning like a fool.

Nuts was a delicious start to the Hudson Valley series. Fans of humor, wicked banter, delightful heat and foodie books grab some Nuts!

Quote

“Go on. Try it,” he said, offering me the strawberry. “I don’t take candy from strangers.”

“It’s not candy, and we’re not strangers. We painted together. And fell down a few times.”

“Exactly,” he nodded, holding it out once more. “Put this in your mouth.” “That’s exactly what a stranger might say,” I said, but opened up.

He dropped it onto my tongue, his eyes crinkling when I let out the tiniest sigh. “That’s a great fucking strawberry.”;

I’ve seen this book around and actually added it on my tbr-list a while ago. Your review definitely made me want to pick it up right now! Sexy and funny books help me lighten after tiresome day. I love format of this review, Kim.

  2. Olivia

Again, as I said on one of your previous reviews this one is a little bit too new adult for me. BUT I have seen the cover and the title around and well, it made me laugh. A lot. But I wanted to see if the book was actually good as well, and it sounds like it is. Which is epic! I doubt I will ever read this one but as a combination of the cover, title, and the apparently-god content, I have decided I like it too 😀

I definitely need this in my life! My only book by Alice Clayton I’ve listened to is Wallbanger and I loved the story and the audio! I need more by this author. Lovely review!

I’ve never wanted to run to walmart and grab the first bag of nuts I see a day in my life but this cover is whew! This is a perfect example of never judge a book by it’s title because after reading your review, nuts sounds absolutely amazing! How in the hell do you keep finding all the good books lol.

  7. Cyn

AH YAY! Love seeing all the stars and flames!!
I just picked this guy up, so excited! I loved Alice Clayton’s Wallbanger and add the fact that this one is so for the foodie and I’m sold!
    Awesome review, Kim!

  8. Kathy

I’m thinking I need to revisit Alice Clayton. I’m missing the laughter I used to get from her snarky and banter filled writing. Have I told you I LOVE this review?

  9. Kay

I can’t take this cover seriously. lol BUT that may be the point and I love banter, food, and humor in my romance. Those elements are my favorite.

  10. Kristin

LoL “Put this in your mouth.” “That’s exactly what a stranger would say.” >.< I'm not sure if that is supposed to be funny or not but it had me rolling. I love that this book has humor (while it may not always be intentional), and sexy good times. I will have to add this book to my list.

  11. Sharon

Ok Kim, I’ll bite 🙂 I will not read hungry and I love a book that makes you have a huge grin on your face. Thanks, wonderful review.

  14. Melanie Simmons

I don’t read/listen to many contemporary romances, but keep hearing great things about Alice Clayton. I saw so many rave reviews for the Cocktail series. Looks like she has another winner here. I might have to try one of them sometime.

  15. Katherine

Food, humor, family craziness, and heat. How can I resist! Plus, I must find out what it is about veggies that is sexy! Clayton has been on my TBR for awhile and this sounds ridiculously fun!

  16. Maureen Beatrice

Vegies are sexy?? Really? Haha I definitely need to check this book out. If the author is able to make vegies sound sexy it must be a great book.
I love romance novels with humor in it. They always feel like the perfect getaway from real life. And books about food?? Love it!!

  17. Grace

Love me some Alie Clayton! So glad to hear good things about this one. Love the food element too! Great review!

  18. Heidi

I like the sound of the bakery. I remember all the food in Wallbanger. I need to check out this series.

  19. Sophia Rose

I skipped her other series because I heard about it late in the game, but this one sounds cute and hot. I love romances involving good food.

  20. Ramona

Sounds positively delicious, both food-wise and in terms of the story. The humor, the setting, the not-so-forthcoming Leo … and did I mention the food? 🙂 I’d love to read this on a holiday!

  21. Rita

I just moved from the Hudson Valley to So Cal so I was intrigued to read a description of this book.. I have to admit I didn’t have the same experience these MCs did when living there, ha. Oh boy, sounds a bit naughty but fun 🙂

  22. Laurel-Rain Snow

I haven’t read this author…yet. But this book and the upcoming series are bound to be fun. Thanks for sharing. I’m imagining the wicked banter—I love banter too!—and the setting. Thanks for sharing.

  23. kindlemom1

I had to LOL at number 2 Kim! The cover on this cracks me up so much and I think it is the immature middle school girl in me that’s doing it! 😛
Glad this was both a fun and hot read!

  24. Nick

Oh man those food descriptions! It made my mouth water all throughout! I’m excited to read the next book too. The couple will be so much fun!
So happy you had such fun with this one, Kim! 🙂

  25. Fran

Oh, this sounds like a very light, enjoyable read! I love when there’s humor in dialogues, among other things, so I’ll definitely keep this one in mind! xx

  27. Trish

I’ve only read one book by Alice (Wallbanger) but I loved it, there were so many laugh out loud moments. I still need to finish that series but I’ll definitely be adding this one on to my TBR too. Sounds like so much fun!
