"I couldn’t erase the memory of the video. A little boy with dark brown skin, a little skinny but overall healthy looking, stood naked in the middle of a nondescript room. A disembodied voice ordered him to turn in a circle, to raise his arms over his head, to bend over. He obeyed with a glazed look in his eyes and tears running down his cheeks. A price was named just before the video ended. I would kill someone for that little boy tonight." Savvy undercover work leads Lucy Kendall to an underground child sex trafficking ring. But when her best lead is found dead, Lucy becomes a suspect in a murder she didn’t commit. Lucy barrels ahead, determined to take out the trafficking ring no matter the personal cost. Powerful outside forces intervene, and she finds herself on the run for murder.  Clearing her name means embracing her growing dark side. With Chris by her side, Lucy fights for justice. Is a monster from the past Lucy’s worst enemy, or will the blossoming evil in her own heart be her ultimate destruction?  Packed with suspense, See Them Run is a dark psychological thriller with a finely crafted mystery that takes readers into the deepest recesses of the human psyche.

See Them Run is the second Lucy Kendall book by Stacy Green. Suspenseful with engaging characters I once again slipped into Lucy’s world as she plays judge, jury and executioner. Green takes us into the seedy world of child sex trafficking in this well-crafted thriller.

Five Caffeinated reasons to grab See Them Run

  • Lucy Kendall is one interesting private investigator. In her former life, she was a social worker but riddled with guilt when the system’s red tape and procedural bullshit cost a life she set out on her own to make things right. With the help of her techie friend, she unearths the darker evil side of the city and quietly seeks justice. She is kickass, tenacious and like a certain charming serial killer we all know and love (Dexter), she loves her job a little too much.
  • Green spins captivating cases and this time we go undercover to stop a child sex trafficking ring. Power, greed, secrets and dangerous men with deep pockets are involved. When one of her sources ends up dead, Lucy soon finds herself caught in a deadly trap and accused of murder.
  • Dynamic friendships and secondary characters that have depth help balance out Lucy and the cases she works. Chris knows her secrets and tries to keep her from getting herself killed. Todd Beckett is on the police force and aids her. These two men both like and respect Lucy and there are hints of feelings, but Green is taking any kind of development slow. It is a nice little thread of curiosity.
  • Sex trafficking particularly those dealing with children is a dark subject but Green handled it well and the storyline was well researched giving it authenticity. I appreciated her thoughtful approach to the subject without sugar coating it.
  • See Them Run was a well-crafted tale with overall arc and character development. The case was fairly wrapped up, but like in the real world, you snip at pieces of these networks and hope that eventually you get at the root. I am anxious to see more advancement on the series arc concerning “Mother.” An intense thriller with a complex heroine who both freaks me out and draws me close.

Fans of Dexter, and suspense thrillers will find See Them Run and the Lucy Kendall series to be satisfying reads that keep you flipping the pages.

The subject matter is terrible, so the book must be good, as only an experienced author would venture to explore it. But I still don’t think I can read it. It would give me nightmares for sure. The review, as always, is exemplary, Kimba. Thank you for sharing.

    • kimbacaffeinate

It is a dark topic and she manages to address it without making it too dark

    • kimbacaffeinate

While the topic is dark, this really falls low on the violence and is higher on suspense

  2. Jeann

Woah, for this book to cover child sex trafficking it must be very disturbing, but it sounds like it handled it well as a detective novel. Great review Kimba!

    • kimbacaffeinate

It was Jeann and we didn’t go too deep, Green educated and added suspense without taking us too far into the despair.

  3. Lily B

child sex trafficking ring? I have to say a bit disturbing, but it sounds like the book was done very well.

  4. Lily

I love the sound of this one and everything you’ve been saying about it. Yes, it deals with a serious subject matter but it seems like the author handled it right and made an interesting story.

    • kimbacaffeinate

She did, and I love that we see growth and character development as the series progresses.

  5. Teddyree

I love Dexter, sad that it’s over but I guess I could feed the addiction by starting on this series haha

  6. Sophia Rose

Just reading your review and the blurb tell me this would be a very engaging read. I think I would feel such anger and really cheer the heroine on.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Yes, she teeters a fine line, but I do find myself rooting for her.

  7. Melissa (Books and Things)

Oh need this series. I do enjoy thrillers and I’m so happy the heroine is strong. Yes, we’ve all wanted to circumvent the red tape. :p Glad also that the subject matter was handled well. Yep, need this series. 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

It was and yes, she does things that cross the line in the name of justice. I find her to be an intriguing character.

  8. Heidi

Yikes. I don’t know about the whole sex trafficing thing. That sounds like heavy duty material even if it is handled well. Happy weekend.

    • kimbacaffeinate

She gave us knowledge and suspense without making it overly dark if you know what I mean.

  9. Sarah

Wow that synopsis gave me chills…. I think I’d have nightmares from the subject matter alone! Great review 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

It is a dark and scary subject but Green handles it well, and the case kept me engaged.

  10. Katherine

This sounds intense and compelling but just the excerpt made me want to sob so I’m thinking I’m too much of a wimp for this one. I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’ll keep an eye out for the author.

    • kimbacaffeinate

She does a great job of balancing this Katherine. It doesn’t go too dark

  11. Laurel-Rain Snow

I really need to get going on this series…I have the first one. “Social worker,” even if former, did pique my interest.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Yes, she has an interesting background and is a complex and curious heroine.

  12. Tanja

I haven’t heard of this author, but I really like the sound of this book. Actually I’m really curious about trafficking. That topic should be discussed more in books. Great review, Kim 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

I agree and she does a great job of bringing the subject matter to light without making it overly dark for the reader.

  13. kindlemom1

This whole read sounds disturbing with the tough subject matter but I am glad the author handled it all so well. It looks like you really liked this.

  14. Felicia the Geeky Blogger

I picked up the first book over Christmas for my mom. I already told her I was going to borrow it. I think I would love this series because it is right up my PI kind of read.

Okay You convinced me on this one Kim from social worker to private cop I gotta see how the author develops this one.

You are welcome Debbie, her back story and motives are interesting.

  16. Jenny

“An intense thriller with a complex heroine who both freaks me out and draws me close.”

Well if that doesn’t make me curious, I don’t know what will Kim! I have to meet Lucy now, I love a character who hovers precariously between being badass and possibly doing something that will cross the line of being redeemable. 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

She is a curiosity Jenny. I enjoy complex characters like Lucy.

  17. Nick

    Well, that’s a BLOODY cover! :O Definitely eye-catching!
I like that this tackles sex trafficking. It’s such an important issue that needs to be spotlighted more, in my opinion!
I’ll have to check this author out. Lovely review, Kim!

  18. Mary

Sex trafficking is really a dark subject but, handled well, it can make a story. Social worker turned PI — I like it!

    • kimbacaffeinate

She gave deets, but kept it from being too dark for the reader.

  19. Hafsah

That is a slightly scary cover! But I’m glad to see you enjoyed the book, Kimberly! While I love dark books, I think this one is a little too dark for me.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Thanks Hafsah, while the subject matter is certainly dark..the tone is more suspenseful than dark.

  20. Stacy Green

  21. Melliane

Interesting topic and I confess that I’m always intrigued by PI stories because I’m always so taken by the investigations. Glad you had a good time. I don’t remember about book 1, I’ll check that out.

    • kimbacaffeinate

I enjoy a good PI story too, and I like Lucy’s internal struggles

  22. Christy

Well that’s a disturbing blurb. I’m pretty sure I’d want to kill someone while reading this. Lucy sounds like a great heroine!
