Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians protect humanity from unspeakable horrors--but their hearts are as fragile as any mortal's. . . For centuries, Lisette d'Alençon has been a warrior against the dark. She fights alongside her brothers and comrades. But when the dreams start coming, she can't bear to confess them to the Immortal Guardians' command. Dreams of a dark-haired man with soft eyes and brutal wounds, a man her heart aches for--and a man she knows has been declared a traitor. Zach is an exile, a loner. He won't defend himself against false accusations or grovel to those who should have faith in him. But he'll damn sure defend the woman who kept him sane against a plague of super-vamps that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The Guardians will blame him, and that will make Lisette suspect, too. With life, death and eternity on the line, who can they really trust?

I was excited to begin reading Night Unbound the fifth Immortal Guardian novel by Dianne Duvall. This action packed paranormal suspense series has a unique twist on vampires and immortals with heated swoon-worthy romances. In Night Unbound, we get Zach and Lisette’s story wrapped in danger and a strengthening of the Immortal Guardians.

Zach is an immortal and perhaps as old as Seth; the two are cousins of sort. From his perch on the roof, he has become quite smitten with Lisette. Despite his age, he has led a very solitary existence and his brief interactions with her in the previous novel has him feeling protective. While his feelings reek of insta-love, and she suffers from insta-attraction, I easily swallowed the pill. Why? These feelings are very new to Zach. He isn’t even sure how to label them. As for Lisette, can you blame her? Zach is dreamy, can fly and the way he looks at her. Oh yeah.*melt me* The romance delivers heat and moments that will make you sigh.

“I like the buttons.” He slipped the first through its corresponding buttonhole, parted the material, and then moved on to the next. “I like the slow reveal.”-Zach to Lisette

In addition, there are moments that will make you giggle: snort.

“Like I want to tear your pants off, strip naked, and explore the Kama Sutra with you.”-Lisette

When the Immortal Guardians are betrayed, Seth blames Zach and in his typical hotheaded fashion, he acts first and leaves Zach at the mercy of the Others. Zach is being tortured; Lisette is having strange dreams and new amped up vampires appear in the streets again putting the Guardians in danger. When Zack escapes the Others, Lisette nurses him back to health defying Seth’s orders, and it added to the suspense. We get a lot of team interaction and spend time with Seth as we see our faithful leader struggle to keep his team safe and unearth a spy within their midst. The banter between Seth and Zach was both touching and hilarious.

“For a moment I just felt this peculiar… I don’t know… non-murderous connection to you or something.” –Zach “It’s called kinship, asshole.”-Seth

The plot was fast-paced, with intense battles, and moving moments within the Guardian team.  I devoured Night Unbound as Duvall kept me dangling from one thread to the next. The romance was heavy on the sexy-time between climatic scenes, reveals, and battles all of which left me breathless. We spent a lot of time with the team, and I enjoyed their comradery.

Since Night Unbound is only the second book that I have read in the series, I felt it gave me a better understanding of the paranormal threads, the Guardians and Others. A new threat the team faced was intense with twists and turns making it difficult for Seth to spot the enemy and folks; it was one heck of a ride.

I’ve heard good things about this author! I’m not craving PNR lately so I’ll probably wait until later, but I’ll definitely have to consider reading them!

  7. Melliane

It’s nice to have a good series like that. I heard a lot about the author but I haven’t read any of her book. But I wonder if I have one, I’ll have to look for that. thanks for the review!

Oh gosh, I need this series as well Kimba! I like the banter build-up of the camaraderie/friendship you mentioned between Seth and Zach.
“For a moment I just felt this peculiar… I don’t know… non-murderous connection to you or something.” –Zach “It’s called kinship, asshole.”-Seth Love that kind kind of stuff. The world-building , characters and romance all sound like my type of read. Being a fan of paranormal romance, I need to catch this series fast. Thanks Kimba 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

The banter is wonderful and Duvall makes it all feel natural and genuine.

  9. Katherine

The premise itself didn’t grab me but the little excerpts did! This isn’t my usual genre but I’ll have to look for the first one in this series next time I’m at the library. It sounds fun!

    • kimbacaffeinate

You know me, I read a little of this and a little of that. This feeds my paranormal needs and it was fun, intense and hot.

  10. Stephanie

This sounds like a great series! I love it when an author blends several paranormal elements. I’m going to have to go back and find the first book.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • kimbacaffeinate

Thanks Stephanie, I totally do too, and love her take on things.

  11. Sharodna

  12. Lily

I feel like I should give this series a shot! I’m not a huge fan of the cover (i’d be too embarrased to be caught reading it in public) but the quotes you shared we’re ones I loved! Great review 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

Yeah, this would be good for kindle. When I was younger we sewed book covers for paperbacks to hide the steamy covers..LOL

  13. Carmel

I liked the plot way more than I did the romance which is too bad because it was the latter that first got my hooked on this series. That being said, Duvall’s sexy times are without equal, and you should definitely go back & read the other installments. Book 1 was my FAV! Roland… *swoon*

    • kimbacaffeinate

It was a shame you didn’t connect with the romance. I bought book one and am anxious to read Roland’s story 🙂

  14. Jenea

Hehe, love the quotes!!! This sounds like a pretty awesome series so far. Great review.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Thanks Megan, yeah I laughed and swooned a lot. Duvall had some great lines throughout the tale.

  15. Felicia the Geeky Blogger

Downloaded it last week. I have one more review audiobook before I start on my own shelves 🙂 I am curious about Lissette fronting a book but I knew she would be next. I did hear the overall storyline does move forward quite a bit (excited about that). I have listened to these all on audio and just adore the series. You really should read the other ones, they are great!

  16. Nick

I’m not a fan of the cover and the mention of insta-love has me running the other way, but I like the two quotes you shared. I’m always up for a book that can make me giggle-snort! 😀
    Lovely review, Kim!

    • kimbacaffeinate

As I stated in my review, it felt like insta at first, but this was his first time feeling any of these types of emotions. Cover aside, this was a fun, hot, read.

  17. Silvia
