Scott Grant has a bustling family practice in the small Oregon community of Thunder Point. The town and its people have embraced the widowed doctor and father of two, his children are thriving, and Scott knows it's time to move on from his loss. But as the town's only doctor, the dating scene is awkward. That is, until a stunning physician's assistant applies for a job at his clinic. Peyton Lacoumette considers herself entirely out of the dating scene. She's already been burned by a man with kids, and she's come to Thunder Point determined not to repeat past mistakes. When Scott offers her a job, at a much lower salary than she's used to, Peyton is surprisingly eager to accept…at least for now. She's willing to stay for a three-month trial period while she explores other options. Scott and Peyton know the arrangement is temporary—it isn't enough time to build a real relationship, never mind anything with lasting commitment. But love can blossom faster than you think when the timing is right, and this short visit just might hold the promise of forever.

The Promise by Robyn Carr is the fifth book in the Thunder Point series, and I have come to love the townsfolk in this coastal, Oregon community. This story updates us on previous characters and introduces Peyton Lacoumette. She is a talented medical assistant who needs a change. When she steps into Scott Grant’s medical practice, she finds more than expected. This was a delightful, sweet romance and once again, Carr had me wrapped up in this romance.

For those who have been reading the story, I think we all have been waiting for Scott Grant’s story. He is the local doctor and widower with two small children. He and his practice have become a focal point in this small town. When Peyton walks in and applies to be his assistant, he is stunned. First, she is over qualified and second for the first time in a long time, his heart flutters. Peyton is escaping from a failed office romance that has left her reevaluating and questions her own judgment. The tale that unfolds is sweet, full of reflection and growth.

Carr writes characters that are realistic, flawed and at their core good people. They are easy to root for, even when you have the urge to slap them in the back of the head. Scott is wonderful and finds himself falling for Peyton. However, Peyton has only made a three-month commitment to his practice. The question is when she leaves will she be taking his heart? I liked Peyton and felt for her. She does not rush things, has a strong moral compass and a huge heart. Ooo we get updates, from previous characters and see another interesting relationship develop. It made me giggle, and I loved their interaction. Who is it you ask? Well, you will just have to read the Promise and discover that for yourself. Babies, weddings and promotions as well as camping on the beach made me glad to visit.

The Promise gave us a little drama, and personal growth. I got a little frustrated by the character’s lack of communication towards the end, but lessons needed to be learned, and I enjoyed seeing the characters grow. There is a lesson in here too, and Carr reminds us that riches come in the form of money and possessions. The Promise was a wonderful edition to this series, and I closed the book with a smile.

I finished this one over the weekend. It was the first Thunder Point book for me and I was mighty disappointed when it was over. I wanted more! It’s a good thing I have four more books to read. 😉

Thanks for your thoughts, we agreed on many things. Plus I loved the new secondary romance that developed as well. I haven’t spent much time with either character but they made me smile!!

I just read your review of the Promise, and yes we share similar opinions. Thank Stephanie!

I cant wait to start this series later this summer, I plan on finishing VR up first but this one sounds so good maybe I’ll skip ahead. 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

Ooo VR is my favorite small-town series of all time. I cried when it ended.

Great minds think alike… (chuckle). I loved the same things you did, and like you, I was surprised and a bit disappointed at the way things almost broke down. But Robyn Carr always pulls it out, and I think you’re right about lessons learned. I’m already looking forward to the next book!

    • kimbacaffeinate

She did bring the tale back around but miscommunication makes me four kinds of crazy!

This is one of those series I’ve been wanting to read for a while. I’ve heard such good things about it. Sounds like this was another good addition and I’m glad you enjoyed it. Great review!

I read Robyn’s Grace Valley & Virgin River series & loved them! I have been collecting the books in this series, but haven’t gotten started yet. Thanks for the review!

Ooo enjoy. Thunder Point is becoming a second home for me.

I love, love, love her Virgin River series Shelia.

I’m really going to have to start this series. I’ve been reading some great reviews about this book but it definitely seems like a series that works best if started from the beginning. I’ll be prepared for communication breakdown when I get to this one though! Luckily it sounds like the characters are good enough that this is an annoyance and not a put down the book offence.

I adore Carr. Her Virgin River series remains my favorite but the folks of Thunder Point are growing on me.

  8. Mary

Uhg, I so dislike when there’s miscommunication that could be solved with a quick little sit-down conversation. Still, I do love the small-town world Robyn Carr created.

    • kimbacaffeinate

I so agree, she makes the town and people come to life. Miscommunication always makes me batty 🙂

  9. Sam

It’s not often that I enjoy a series this many books in. I find I lose interest after a while, but I’m glad that wasn’t the case for you here! I’ve heard lots of good things about this author and can’t wait to give one of her books a try one day. Lovely review as always. 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

Thanks Sam, I love these small-town series and mix them in to my tbr pile, They offer little escapes.

eeeh not a fan of lack of communication but I’m glad you still adored this novel despite that.

    Lovely review, Kimba! <33

*nods head* I love the characters in this series 🙂

  13. Kathryn

Like you I loved the book, and was annoyed at the two when communication broke down before the final ‘reconciliation’. I loved getting updates on the other characters – especially Rawley – I have a soft spot for him. Robyn Carr is one of my top choices of authors for small town romance series.

    • kimbacaffeinate

I agree Kathryn, I have a soft spot for Rawley too 🙂
