Idealistic good girl Madelyn Grayson believes in doing what’s right. Even as a high-powered executive in the mad world of advertising, she doesn’t cut corners, making her ad campaigns sizzle without having to burn anyone along the way.
Rival exec Zack Douglas never wastes an opportunity to land the next big deal—especially when it benefits him. A bad boy with a reputation to match, he has no qualms about doing whatever it takes to get ahead, no matter who gets in the way. When a hot promotion pops up at their company, both Zack and Madelyn wind up on the short list for the position. But as the two square off, they discover that being heated rivals in the office makes for scorching bed play behind closed doors. Will Madelyn’s steamy, secret affair with Mr. Vice make her compromise her ideals—or worse, lose her heart?

Tracey Anne Warren’s first novel in the Graysons series The Last Man on Earth provided wicked banter and a hate to lovers relationship that had me giggling and sighing. From corporate offices to romantic inns I was swept up in this love affair. Mini review: Strong, likeable characters, sizzling romance and growth made this a memorable tale.

In a fast paced PR firm in New York City we meet Madelyn Grayson, who at almost thirty has become a successful ad executive and is working her way up the corporate ladder. Her main competition is fellow employee Zack Douglas and he makes her crazy. He is a ruthless businessmen and classic bad boy who also happens to be drop dead gorgeous. As these two exchange one-line zingers and compete for high profile campaigns the air sizzles. These two quickly discover that the heat they share can lead to hot passion in the bedroom.

Warren introduced two strong, successful characters who were flawed in the relationship department. Madelyn has put her career first and slipped into an easy relationship with her lifelong friend. When he proposes, she turns him down because shouldn’t kisses bring heat and curl your toes or is that just in fairy tales? She is feeling pressure from her meddling family, and her attraction to Zack complicates things. I liked Madelyn, and while I didn’t always approve of her actions I felt strongly for her. Zack from outward appearances has it all. After all, he has a fancy car, a successful career and a woman on each arm. Zack has a reputation for being a bad boy, and he does nothing to quell the office rumor mill. I really liked Zack, underneath his confident exterior there is this sweet, vulnerable and flawed man. He has abandonment issues, and I loved seeing him grow and overcome.

The Last Man on Earth was a hilarious, sweet and sizzling hot romance with characters that kept me engaged. Warren paced the tale well, with just enough angst to keep me searching for my happily ever after. Her characters were realistic, flawed and truly likable. She peeled back their layers and then allowed them to grow. Madelyn was strong and wasn’t afraid to demand what she deserved, and I liked that about her. I struggled with the decision she made, but even as I disagreed, I understood her actions. Thankfully she rectifies her mistakes. The chemistry between Zack and Madelyn was red hot and passionate. I loved their conversations, his nickname for her. I became invested in their relationship even when I wanted to throttle them. Warren introduced side characters who interested me, and I enjoyed the little side stories. The tale wrapped up nicely, and I look forward to the next book in this series.

If you adore the haters to lovers trope, you will enjoy the wicked banter in The Last Man on Earth. The next book in the series, The Man Plan will feature Madelyn’s sister and her best friend. There is a sneak peak at the back of the book and I am already anxious to read her story.

I don’t always like the haters to lover trope, but sometimes it works well. And usually entertaining at least, so it’s often worth the bit of back and forth. It sounds like the characters in this one are great!

  13. Lindy

This story sounds interesting. It’s always fun when the main characters start off not liked each other. It takes real talent for an author to create great banter between two characters, and that always pulls me in. I’m glad that these characters were flawed, because that makes them more real. Sweet & hilarious? Sign me up!!!!

    • kimbacaffeinate

I agree Lindy and she does a fantastic job making the air sizzle and the sparks fly 🙂

I saw the title and thought it was a dystopian, so imagine my surprise when I saw the cover!
This sounds like my kind of contemporary romance novel, Kim. Who doesn’t like a good hate to love relationship filled with plenty of sexual tension? 😉 I’ll be looking into this one and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
    Great review, Kim.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Hate to love is sometimes the best troupe to read. I mean there is a bit of snarkiness there that just never goes away and makes their relationship interesting. This one is on my wishlist!
