Coffee Pot Reviews

Welcome to Coffee Pot Reviews! These are short and sweet reviews done in the length of time it takes my coffee pot to brew! Today I am sharing Indexing by Mira Grant, a serial and the first book in the Kingdom series Her Mad Hatter by Maria Hall. Both deal with fairy tales. Grab a cup of DD coffee and some munchkins, pull up a chair and enjoy!

Alice is all grown up. Running the Mad Hatter's Cupcakery and Tea Shoppe is a delicious job, until fate--and a fairy godmother with a weakness for bad boys--throws her a curveball. Now, Alice is the newest resident of Wonderland, where the Mad Hatter fuels her fantasies and thrills her body with his dark touch. The Mad Hatter may have a voice and a body made for sex, but he takes no lovers. Ever. But a determined fairy godmother has forced Alice into Wonderland--and his arms. Now, as desire and madness converge, the Hatter must decide if he will fight the fairy godmother's mating--or fight for Alice.

Her Mad Hatter is a novella and the first in the Kingdom series, dealing with the “bad boys” of fiction and their snarky fairy-godmother. She has been tasked with seeing all of them happily married within the year. The first tale deals with the Mad Hatter and Alice Hu. This was an easy read, filled with funny moments, a little heat and a sexy Mad Hatter who reminded me of Johnny Depp *swoons*. I enjoyed Marie Hall’s twist on Alice in Wonderland and look forward to reading Gerald Beauty’s. (Beauty and the Beast)

“Never underestimate the power of a good story.” Good advice…especially when a story can kill you. For most people, the story of their lives is just that: the accumulation of time, encounters, and actions into a cohesive whole. But for an unfortunate few, that day-to-day existence is affected—perhaps infected is a better word—by memetic incursion: where narratives the rest of the world considers fairy tales becomes reality, often with disastrous results. That’s where the ATI Management Bureau steps in. A motley team struggling with their own unfolding narratives, they are tasked with identifying potential outbreaks using Aarne-Thompson Indexing and making sure the story doesn’t reach “ever after”…because if it does, usually someone is insane, dead—or worse. Because with the ATI, it goes without saying that neither a Cinderalla, a Snow White, nor any other character-type on the Index is going to have a happy ending for anyone involved.

Indexing is an urban fantasy serial from one of my favorite authors Seanan McGuire. Every few weeks, another episode, was delivered to my kindle app. I quite enjoyed Indexing and its twist on fairy tales. What if a fairy tale narrative could become reality? What if one event in your life could set of the narrative affecting you and those around you? A flute player becomes a pied piper leading others to their death? What if a bad break-up causing a young girl to kill her sisters and step-parents? McGuire introduces us to a team at the ATI Management Bureau. An organization whose sole propose is to protect the environment from fairy tales that activate. This was fun; I am not entirely sure how it would work as a novel, but I enjoyed each of the cases or memetic incursions. The team is lead by Harry Marchen (Henrietta) a potential 709- Snow White. One of my favorite characters is Sloan. She is an averted Wicked Step-Sister and her snark and kick-ass attitude won me over. The tale had a Fringe vibe, and if you are familiar with the popular television series, you will slip right into this crazy world. Each new submission deals with a new memetic incursion and advances the overall ARC. Indexing was a fun read that I was sorry to see come to an end.

I grabbed ‘Her Mad Hatter’ while it was kindle freebie too, but still haven’t read it. I never could resist a fairytale retellings. I’m glad to hear it was good, and that Johnny Depp similarity comment just pushed it up my tbr. 🙂

  2. sharonda

Still need to read Her Mad Hatter & Indexing looks really good. I ‘m loving the cover 🙂

    • kimbacaffeinate

It was good, did you see you can get books 1-3 for .99 cents, they are normally almost 4.00

    • kimbacaffeinate

It was good, and the deal for books one to three is fantastic!

  3. Berls

I’m so glad you liked her Mad Hatter – I love Marie’s work so far but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. Soon! And Indexing sounds neat, I’ll have to add it to my TBR!

  4. Lupdilup

I can always count on you to expend my reading/listing horizon. I never heard of these to books before, but now thanks to you they are on my radar..Thanks 🙂

Is this a meme? Not sure how the work.

    • kimbacaffeinate

No it is not a meme, it is a feature. I usually do a coffee pot review once or sometimes twice a month. I created last December when I had more reviews per month then days in the week…LOL It is perfect for novellas or books I purchased for myself and serial reviews. Tehehe..on broadening your horizon, yes I read a little of everything.

  5. Mishel

This is my first Coffee Pot review Kimba and I absolutely love the cute meme idea!!

The Mad Hatter sounds really good. Although I haven’t had the chance to read many fairytale retellings I always love adding them to my TBR list. I like the unique premise though, and with it being a special price on Amazon I may have to go check the series out.

And I haven’t had the chance to read any of Mcguire’s books yet. I’ve heard really great things though and I’m looking forward to starting one soon =)

    • kimbacaffeinate

thanks Mishel, I try to do at least one coffee pot review a month, and enjoy them. I hope you snatch the Kingdom offer, the books buy themselves are almost 4.00. Enjoy and McGuire is a wonderful author, one of my favs!

  6. Alexa

I really can’t wait to read Her Mad Hatter. I just love the cover and I love the concept. It sounds like it was a good read.

    Thanks for the great reviews!

  7. Jenea

I haven’t see either of these. I really like the sounds of Her Mad Hatter though. 🙂

  8. A Voracious Reader

Oh! Oh! I have Her Mad Hatter. I need to bump that one up the ladder. The sound of Indexing reminds me of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next or Nursery Crimes books. I need to add that one to the TBR. Great reviews!

  9. kindlemom1

I have really been digging novellas lately because I sadly, just haven’t had the time to read. I am so glad I have The Mad Hatter, that cover is yummy and it sounds like it was a good read.

  10. Braine Talk Supe

Glad you liked the first Kingdom novella, it gets better with the succeeding stories. I personally find it too short. For the purpose of drawing out tension, I wish the stories were longer. Have you read her contemporary NA series? You’ll love those!

    • kimbacaffeinate

I would agree, longer would have been nicer but it was fun 🙂

  11. Michelle

I think I own Her Mad Hatter but I haven’t gotten around to reading it. Now I’m super curious about it. Great reviews.

  12. Lark

Good reviews! Just picked up the first 3 Kingdom books with the Amazon deal. I’m still debating the Seanan McGuire.

    • kimbacaffeinate

The McGuire is a full-length, it was delivered as a serial and took 4 months to read, but you get read the whole thing now.

    • kimbacaffeinate

MaGuire’s is a serial/full-length novel. I hope you get to try it 🙂

  13. Glass

This is really great idea – and I love coffee!:)

I saw Her Mad Hatter, but I skipped it, I didn’t think it would be that good. Now I’m sorry I did that.

    • kimbacaffeinate

I grabbed it when it was free, and now the first three are .99 cents as a collection.

    • kimbacaffeinate

Glad you like the meme, it is a fun one, and I try to do them once a month.

  14. Lindy

I like fairytale retellings! That’s awesome that both of your reviews take some story points from fairytales. Her Mad Hatter sounds like a book I might enjoy. I read two contemporaries by Marie Hall and wonder if I would enjoy her paranormal reads as well. I love Johnny Depp, and that alone makes me want to check out this book! LOL Great mini reviews! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  15. Bea

I waited for Indexing to finish so I could read it in one gulp; maybe I’ll get to it this weekend.

Her Mad Hatter is intriguing, I may give that one a try too. So many books, so little time. 😀

  16. Pamela D

I am glad to hear that you liked Her Mad Hatter. I picked this book up a few days ago, because it was free and I loved the cover. I guess I will have to read it now! 🙂
